As the NWSL Fall Series winds down, the top finishers have already ended their season. Christine Sinclair took two penalty kicks to give the Thorns a 2-1 win over the Reign and secure the Verizon Community Shield for Portland. That $25,000 prize will go to their community partner, Mimiâ’s Fresh Tees, a social justice-focused t-shirt company based in Portland. The Houston Dash took home second place, which means they will donate $15,000 to the Houston chapter of the NAACP. The third place prize for the Verizon Community Shield is still up for grabs and will be determined in this weekend’s games.
Sky Blue FC and Chicago also finished their season last weekend, with Sky Blue pulling off a huge 3-1 win over the Red Stars. This year has been full of growth for the New Jersey club, and this final win proves that the good moments we’ve seen from them periodically aren’t a fluke. Sky Blue is coming into its new form as one of the most fun teams to watch, and they should be a real contender in years to come.
This week’s games should be extra exciting because both previous meetings of these matchups resulted in ties. This final weekend of games is the last chance for these teams to battle it out and try to take home a win. The Orlando Pride plays the North Carolina Courage Saturday as they try to come back from their loss to the Dash last week. Their defense had some trouble, but they should stand a chance against a Courage team that’s coming off a 4-1 loss to the Dash and a week off. Both teams will look to get on the board after their last meeting ended in a 0-0 draw.
OL Reign and the Utah Royals finished their last game in a thrilling 2-2 tie, and this final match of the Fall Series should be no less exciting. The Reign’s loss to the Thorns last week came in the form of two penalty kicks by Christine Sinclair, but they did manage to get a goal on the board.
The Royals will also be fighting for their first win of the Fall Series after coaching changes shook the club early on. This team has fought hard in every game despite the difficulties this season presented, and they have some great individual performers who could find the back of the net this weekend. Both these teams have been rebuilding during this series, so it will be fun to see who can come out on top.
She Plays has several great fantasy games ready for you to play along with the last weekend of the Fall Series, so make sure to get your picks in soon! Here are some fantasy tips to get you started, and we’ll see you on the leaderboards!
2020 NWSL Fall Series Schedule
- Orlando Pride vs. North Carolina Courage – Saturday, October 16 at 4 pm ET
- OL Reign vs. Utah Royals – Saturday, October 16 at 8 pm ET
Assign the Line
One of our most popular fantasy games is Assign the Line, where you choose the offense, defense, and goalkeeping unit you like best that week to form a super team. This week, consider the NC Courage offense, which is always a threat behind players like Lynn Williams and Debinha. You might also take the Utah Royals, who have seen some great chances from Tziarra King and Amy Rodriguez.
On defense, you could bet on the Orlando Pride repeating their last performance against North Carolina, or go the other way if you think the Courage will hold the Pride out of their final third. Despite their loss to Portland on penalty kicks, OL Reign managed to hold off the powerful Thorns offense pretty well last week, so they might be worth a look on defense as well.
As for your goalkeeper, the Pride could be a good option. Whether we see Ashlyn Harris back in goal or not, you can be sure Orlando will have a solid keeper in net after Brittany Wilson proved herself against the Dash last week. Casey Murphy also had a fine performance last weekend, and could come up big for the Reign if she starts on Saturday.
She Plays’ classic roster game is called Starting XI, which lets you choose a full roster of players to score you fantasy points each week. You’ll want to choose carefully for the last games of the Fall Series so you can grab some last-minute points and try to take the lead.
At forward, choose from big scorers like Debinha or Lynn Williams from North Carolina, Bethany Balcer from OL Reign, or Sydney Leroux from the Orlando Pride. Leroux had a beautiful goal last week and has been a real leadership presence for that team, so keep an eye on her to build on that impact on Saturday.
Other solid picks would be star rookie Tziarra King of the Utah Royals or rock-solid Marta of the Pride. Both have the capacity to make some flashy plays and will certainly be hungry to score in their last week of play for the 2020 season.
No matter how you build your lineup, get your picks in now so you’re ready for Saturday’s games. Thanks for playing She Plays’ NWSL games and stay tuned for more fantasy offerings all year round!
